Just got this today and my 3 year old has not stopped playing with it! He has been really into YouTube videos watching people cut up toy food. A great distraction when I need to get something done but my child is not going to sit all day watching other people play lol. Oh gosh.. Its just so cute watching him play. Quality looks great. Comes with alot . love that it has its own bin to keep it all in. Its a great way to introduce them to using a knife also.

I ordered this for my 2.5 year old daughter who is VERY curious about the kitchen, cooking, etc. She has a play kitchen and tons of plastic "play food", however, I have found that she loses interest in them quickly overall (the play kitchen keeps her attention longer if/when we allow her to use real water in the pots and non-draining sink...). If this sounds like your child, read on! The Melissa & Doug Cutting Food set has been a total A+!! It does actually make a crunch sound when she cuts because of the Velcro between the slices which she seems to really enjoy. I am always leery of buying sets with so many pieces because she just doesn't seem to want to use them for their intended purpose, or the sets don't appeal to her. That is NOT the case with this set!! She loves it for what it is! The pieces have a nice weight because they are constructed from wood. It comes with a wooden knife that has a realistic shape that's rounded at the bottom just enough that it doesn't seem that it would cause damage or scratching if it is used on surfaces other than the cutting board it comes with. My 9 year old son even likes the set! He also likes using them to practice chopping and cutting (he started learning how to make basic recipes in the real kitchen a year ago). But, the thing he really enjoys about it, in his words, "using it to do factions"! It gives him a nice visual for what a 1/4 means when he can chop the pepper into quarters and he now understands reducing basic fractions because of this set - when he chops the pepper or watermelon in half, he started by calling one of the halves 2/4, but visually it made sense to him that 2/4 is also 1/2! If your child or children are in a Montessori School or Daycare, I highly recommend purchasing this set - they will love it! It is great for building and practicing practical life skills. It comes in its own wooden tray (the tray does not have handles, but it is an appropriate size and has ample sides to keep the items from spilling out) making clean up and storage easy for even the youngest kids. I saw in some of the reviews that people complained about the smell - there was no chemical or paint smell to ours, it only has a slight wood smell. My best guess is that Melissa & Doug changed the products that they use on it since those reviews were written. The Velcro seems very good, although we'll see how it will hold up to multiple kids over several years. You could probably replace the Velcro with some effort, if it is needed - but I don't know that it would be the easiest job.

Saw this set of toys when I visited a children's play experience with my granddaughter. I saw these toys being enjoyed by many different children first hand. My granddaughter loves to imitate her mother cooking and has a complete child-sized kitchen. These toys will make an excellent addition. The simulated knife and cutting board provide realistic slicing play. The painted wood toys are of such quality my granddaughter will one day be able to pass them along to her daughter.

This one toy is a hit with all my kids and parents! I use it during my speech therapy sessions to practice requesting and this is one toy that usually stimulates most of my kids into requesting one way or another. I can also model verbs: eat, help, cut. The parents I work with love it so much that they end up buying it as well. It might seem somewhat expensive for a toy, but it's what you come to expect from the brand. Also, I have used plastic versions and it doesn't work as well as this one. I have had four sets in total and I always end up giving them away to my nephews/niece. You just have to be careful with how the kids use the knife. I had one of the knives break, but I was able to use super glue and it worked just fine.

My son is obsessed with this toy set. It was recommended by our speech therapist as a toy for open-ended play to encourage speech. She said it also encourages pre-writing skills (by teaching them to use one hand to hold the food while cutting with the other, the way they'll eventually hold a piece of paper with one hand as they write with the other). I never understood these sets, but now I do. Santa did good with this one.

I've always found that Melissa & Doug items are high quality learning toys for kids, and this food cutting toy doesn't disappoint. It is exactly as pictured and has a nice little wooden box to store all of the pieces. My daughter is 2 yrs and 7 months. She was excited when we opened it up. Her and I played with it and she caught on really fast. It comes with the following: cutting board, wooden knife, watermelon, green pepper that is cut in 4 pieces, cucumber, French bread, carrot that is cut long ways, sliced bread, tomato, and an apple. The French bread is the easiest to cut as it is low and flat. The slices are connected with Velcro that is smartly laying completely flush with the item so little hand don't try to rip it off. This makes the pieces sometimes snug against each other which makes cutting a little more difficult. This is something that will definitely cause strength in the hand and coordination. We will definitely be using this is pretend kitchen play as well.

I got this for my kids because they really wanted to help me in the kitchen. I didn't want them to use a real knife in the kitchen. This is a great substitute. My kids love cutting up the food and cooking up their own creations in their play kitchen. It is easy to cut and helps teach cutting skills. I bought a cheap bucket from the Dollar Store to hold the parts because the box was kind of small. The only down side to this toy is there are ALOT of pieces, but I just keep it in the playroom and don't look at the clutter.

I don’t think there is words to describe how much my 2-1/2 yo loves this toy! She literally gets up in the morning and doesn’t even wake me up anymore , and I find her in the living room cutting up her food! For the first few weeks she couldn’t figure out how to put some of it back together, the loaf of bread is a little tricky and the watermelon , but she can now put all of the pieces back together. When you slice through the Velcro it sounds like real slicing! So cool!

Very durable and easy to use. Only disappointment is I thought they were held together by magnets not velcro. Velcro wears out, magnets do not. Considering the attention span of kids, not a huge deal. I suggest pulling them apart before you try using the cutting knife as initially the are tightly bonded together. This loosens them up a little. Has a very realistic feel as if you are actually slicing the items. Good pretend play item goes well with the mock kitchen setup toy.

We bought this for our daughter when she was in preschool, and she played with it for years. We still have it in the box of toys that we are saving for when friends and family bring over little kids. Our great niece loves playing with it, so much that we bought her this set this year for Christmas. Melissa & Doug makes amazing products - our daughter's set is over ten years old and looks almost new even with a ton of use, the Velcro still works perfectly. The kids love "cutting" the food and putting it back together.
